Massey University - Wellington - Semester or Year Abroad

Overview

Massey Wellington, home to the University’s Creative Campus, has a student population of approximately 4,000 students. Massey Wellington is referred to as the Creative Campus because students typically come here to study - design, communications, journalism, engineering, fine arts, and music; a perfect complement to the city’s art and cultural scene.

History and tradition combine with cutting-edge research and funky vibes at Massey Wellington. Centrally located near the city's artistic and entertainment quarters of Cuba Street and Courtenay Place, students are able to take advantage of this exciting place to live and learn.

Location

Located at Mount Cook, on the edge of the city’s Central Business District, the Massey Wellington campus includes the historic refurbished Museum Building – Tokomaru, home of the University’s College of Creative Arts.

The business, retail and entertainment areas of the city are a comfortable 10 minute walk from the campus and the University’s residential complexes.

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital city and a great place to live. It is compact, set between a magnificent harbour and green hills, where shops, exciting galleries and great restaurants are within walking distance.

Wellington is home to the National Museum - Te Papa, the International Festival of the Arts, the World of Wearable Arts, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Weta Workshop, the Westpac Stadium, and the renowned entertainment district in Courtenay Place.

Wellington caters for nature lovers too; with beautiful beaches, mountain biking, walking tracks and a wildlife sanctuary. Over 60% of Wellington's residents live within 3km of the sea.

Extracurricular Activities

Student life is not just about studying, so Massey provides a range of indoor and outdoor recreational, cultural, and leisure programs through the Recreation and Student Association Centers.

Each year the Massey Wellington campus has a passionate representation at the NZ University Games. There are also a number of clubs including an Alpine & Tramping Club, Ski (Snow) and Karate club to get involved in.

The International Student Support team organizes trips and activities throughout the semester, including a presentation by Peter Jackson‘s world renowned Weta Workshop.

As Wellington is the cultural and arts center of New Zealand, it is host to many events; from sporting matches in the Westpac Stadium to live concerts, theatre, festivals and exhibitions, there is always something to do. There is even a wildlife sanctuary only 5 minutes away from downtown Wellington.

Various optional activities organized by the Student Association may include live concerts, sports days, a comedy night, toga party and a city tour.

Community Involvement

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true New Zealand culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in the Wellington or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in New Zealand on AustraLearn's Culture and Adventure Program. The program includes one day of pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to New Zealand. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for AustraLearn's Conservation Volunteer Weekend.

A word from our alumni
"I loved Massey's central location and suburban city vibe. It is close to the ocean, the capital, and the South Island. It is close to the beautiful rolling landscape of NZ's rural pastures, while still a five minute bus ride to all the shopping centers."
