Location

About Adelaide

Founded in 1836, Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and is the center of the economic, cultural, political, and social life of the state. It is an attractive, well-planned city of wide streets and boulevards, squares, parklands, and a mixture of historic and modern buildings.

Adelaide has a population of 1.3 million and is a cosmopolitan city with a Mediterranean climate, many festivals and a vibrant café culture.
It is small enough to be friendly and welcoming, yet large enough to provide plenty of attractions and entertainment. Adelaide enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool winters.

There are ample recreation activities including cinemas and theatres, music, and shopping; swimming, sailing, and windsurfing at nearby beaches; and hiking and exploring the towns, villages, and wineries in the Mount Lofty Ranges close to the city.

South Australia has a great variety of landscapes to explore outside Adelaide.  The Barossa Valley, a world famous wine region, is 90 minutes from the city and Kangaroo Island an hour by boat from the mainland, has pristine beaches & abundant wildlife. The Adelaide Hills within 30 minutes of the city, has lush farmland, historic villages & unspoilt bushland. Further afield are the Flinders Ranges with spectacular natural scenery and Adelaide is considered to be the gateway to Australia’s Outback.

Around the University

The main campus of the University of Adelaide is located right in the city center of Adelaide, making it very accessible to students using public transport to travel to the campus (the city’s bus, train and tram network all converge on the city center). The campus is also very conveniently located close to the city’s main pedestrian shopping strip, Rundle Mall, with its major department stores and speciality shops. Cafes, food courts, and bookshops can also be found here. Adjacent to the University is the Art Gallery of South Australia, the South Australian Museum (which has a major collection of indigenous artefacts), and the State Library. For those who enjoy exercising, the River Torrens, which runs along one side of the campus, is bordered by a park and a cycling/walking track which winds its way all the way to the beach, 8 miles away.

Internship Details

Any humanities discipline including English, Media, Languages, Asian Studies, Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Development studies, International studies, Politics and Environmental studies.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Arts Internship course has been running for several years and provides students with the opportunity to gain first hand experience of working within an organization outside of the university and develop research skills.

During the course of the internship students are expected to complete a short academic orientation, attend a series of seminars and work on a research task under the joint supervision of an organizational host supervisor and an academic supervisor. By the end of the academic year, student will write a report (of about 7,000 words) giving an account of the research project undertaken during the internship.

When students have been formally notified of placement and supervision arrangements, they should arrange a meeting with their nominated organizational supervisor to begin the process of preliminary planning of the research project. Once the exact terms of the research project have been agreed, the organizational supervisor, the student and the academic supervisor will sign an ‘Internship Agreement’ (sent to students with their confirmation letter) defining the task, outlining the methodology, and detailing the level of support available. Students will work on their negotiated research task at their own time and pace, subject to the agreed schedule of meetings / supervisions. There will also be a number of meetings with the academic supervisor through the second half of the semester to provide additional support and resolve any possible problems. Towards the end of the academic semester, all students will present an oral summary of their findings and receive critical feedback from the academic supervisor. On the due date (early November), all students will submit two bound copies of their research project. One copy will go to the academic supervisor, and the other to the organizational supervisor. A final mark (determined by the University) will be based on the report and the oral presentation

Students will receive 6 University of Adelaide credits for completing the internship. In addition to the internship, students will also enroll in 2 (3 credit points each) courses.

Programs in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji Coordinator

Name:Jan Amann
Title:Coordinator, Outreach and Student Services
Department:Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji Semester/Year Abroad Team
BIO:
Jan Amann manages study abroad admission and participant pre-trip services for students attending the University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Southern Cross University, La Trobe University, Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology and University of Melbourne.

Jan earned her B.A. in English and Philosophy from the University of Scranton in 2006. After studying abroad at the University of Otago in New Zealand, Jan was inspired to work for her school’s study abroad office and pursue an exciting career in International Education. Following graduation, Jan moved to New Zealand for one year where she had the opportunity to travel and work for the government. She has also worked with youth for many years, and led a group of students on an Experiment in International Living trip abroad in 2010. Jan completed her M.A. in International Education at New York University, where she studied abroad (again!) in Hong Kong, China, and worked with international students.

Jan’s additional travels have brought her to Australia, Italy, Canada, Belgium, France, England and the Caribbean. Jan looks forward to helping AustraLearn students plan their semesters abroad!

Advice From The Coordinator:
The two most popular spots for students in Adelaide are Rundle Mall and Glenelg. Rundle Mall is a pedestrian mall with lots of cafes and shops and Glenelg is a resort area by the beach, 20 minutes outside of the city!
A word from our alumni
"I loved the University of Adelaide! It was something I had never experienced before, and will never experience again. As for the city, Adelaide was just beautiful. My favorite thing was the lack of Americans, as compared to the East Coast of Australia. This allowed me to get to know more about the culture and its people, as well as a lot of backyard cricket and kicks of the footy!"
