General information applicable to all GlobaLinks Learning Abroad  Semester and Year Abroad Programs:

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, formerly known as AustraLearn, offers semester and year abroad programs at Macquarie University. As a Macquarie University student you will join a diverse and welcoming community of 31,000 students, with 8,800 international students from over 114 countries.

Macquarie’s beautiful campus environment is the perfect location to study, work and live. Set on 126 hectares of parkland, the University’s natural setting has been maintained with wide, tree-covered walkways between buildings. Located only a 30 minutes from Sydney’s Harbour and central business district, students can find everything they need on campus or near-by. In 2009 Macquarie’s student population was rated as one of the most culturally diverse in Australia (The Good Universities Guide, 2009) making campus a safe and welcoming place. 
 

The Macquarie University Study Abroad Program offers international students the opportunity to study at Macquarie for either one or two semesters. Students can tailor their study programs and receive academic credit at their home university. Students are also eligible to undertake an unpaid internship for academic credit during the course of their studies at Macquarie.

With guaranteed accommodation, airport pickup and a dedicated Study Abroad Advisor, Macquarie University provides a supportive environment for your Study Abroad experience.

Location

Macquarie University’s North Ryde campus is located in parklands only 30 minutes (15 kilometres) north-west of Sydney Harbour and Sydney’s central business district.

The modern, well-equipped campus is set on 126 hectares of peaceful parkland in one of Australia’s premier high-technology corridors. The campus features eateries and recreational facilities, in addition to extensive library and computer facilities, a state-of-the-art Sport and Aquatic Centre, an acclaimed sculpture park, several museums, two hotels and a golf driving range. The Macquarie Centre, a major shopping complex, is also on the doorstep of the campus.

In 2009, Macquarie became the first university in Australia to have its own train station on campus, now we’re connected to the city by underground rail.
 

Academic Highlights

Studying at Macquarie University will give you a highly regarded experience which is academically rigorous, well rounded and designed to develop skills that employer’s value. Study Abroad students are eligible to undertake an unpaid internship for academic credit during the course of their studies at Macquarie. Interns from all backgrounds are placed within Australian workplaces, providing an invaluable learning experience and insight into a particular field of study, and exposing students to the Australian business and cultural environment.

Whilst studying at Macquarie, Study Abroad Students have the opportunity to study subjects that are uniquely designed and presented within the Australian context such as ‘Introduction to Australian Indigenous Studies’, ‘The World Since 1945: An Australian Perspective’ and ‘Australia and Global Studies: An Introduction to Sociology’.

University Services

As a Study Abroad student, you have a dedicated office to drop into on campus, where you can ask advice about courses, talk to your adviser, or just pop in and say hello. The office is located at the U@MQ building, and is open Monday through Thursday, every week of semester.

All Study Abroad students have access to support programs in computer skills, academic writing, desktop publishing, library research skills and many other areas. Discipline-specific English language programs are also available at The Centre for Macquarie English located on campus.

Facilities and services located on campus include:

Housing

As a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad student you are guaranteed pre-arranged accommodation to fit your lifestyle. There are a variety of housing options available which you will apply for after acceptance. Read below for more specific options offered at this university:

Students attending Macquarie University are guaranteed pre-arranged accommodation in a beautiful housing complex located directly across the street from the campus. This accommodation is in self-catered, fully-furnished, shared townhomes. The accommodation is located within a 10 minute walk to Macquarie Centre, which has an ice rink, movie cinema and shops.

The community in which the students will live in allows them to get involved while abroad. Committees have been created to allow students to get involved in social activities, art, sports and charities. There is also a great support system located within the accommodation through their Resident Assistants, who are there for whatever the students may need.

 



 

Orientation

In addition to the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program which is included in your program fees, Macquarie University runs a special Orientation Week for Study Abroad students at the beginning of each semester. Orientation Week involves tailor-made information sessions, campus and city tours and social activities to help Study Abroad students settle into their new environment.

Scholarships Available

Gina Rosko Memorial Scholarship

In cooperation with the Rosko family, Macquarie University and GlobaLinks Learning Abroad are offering this full tuition and housing (for one semester) award to students studying at Macquarie University during the July term.  Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5, substantial financial need with documented involvement in their university and community.  Recipients of this scholarship are required to volunteer no less than 10 hours a week in the Macquarie University international office.

In memory of Ms. Gina Rosko, daughter of Jimmie and Marlene Rosko of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and sister to Ashlee Christine Rosko, this scholarship was created to honor the accomplishments of a remarkable student who died in a car accident in Australia on Monday, August 7, 2000. Gina was attending Macquarie University as a study abroad student through the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad program.

Born on November 16, 1978 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Gina was a graduate of Tremper High School and in her fourth year at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, studying journalism/advertising. Her collegiate memberships and awards included Golden Key National Honor Society, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Deans’ List, Phi Eta Sigma, Public Relations Student Society of America, and teaching assistant for American Indian Ethnic Studies. She also had articles published in the UWM newspaper, The Post. In her memorial service, friends and family paid tribute to Gina’s life and her “magical ability to connect with others.” Gina’s family hopes that all students can continue to experience all that life has to offer and that we all remember count our blessings along the way.

Special Programs/Excursions

Pre-Semester Trips
Why not arrive a weekend early for your semester abroad, and go surfing or visit the Blue Mountains? Macquarie organizes groups of your fellow Study Abroad students for various trips in the weekend before semester, so you can get to know new people and start your studies with new friends.

Global Leadership Certificate
Macquarie’s Global Leadership Certificate (part of the Global Leadership Program, is unique to Macquarie University and provides students with unparalleled opportunities to enhance their Study Abroad or Exchange experience develop important leadership skills and participate in professional development forums. The Certificate has been designed so that you not only learn global skills and understanding – you put them into practice by studying, volunteering and participating in activities in Australia and overseas. As part of Macquarie’s commitment to internationalization, you can participate in the Global Leadership Certificate free of charge. Successful completion of the Global Leadership Certificate will see you receive a certificate of completion, which can provide a competitive edge in the global employment market.

Global Leadership Symposium
As a Study Abroad or Exchange student, you can also take part as a delegate in Macquarie’s Global Leadership Symposium Series (GLSS) and travel with other delegates either to Australia’s capital city, Canberra, or even to a different region of the world (for example Thailand or Singapore), enjoying cultural and regional insights.

Volunteer Abroad
Macquarie has a wide range of volunteer programs for students that operate overseas and in Australia. The programs are designed to stretch and challenge you beyond your comfort zone and profoundly broaden your university experience. Volunteer programs range from working with street youth in Vietnam to working with climate change researchers in far North Queensland and teaching English to children in Mexico.

Get Involved Abroad

Extracurricular Activities

Macquarie has over 50 clubs and societies; joining one is a great way to meet new people on campus. There are societies representing study areas (for example Law, Chiropractic and Psychology), all major religions, and special interests (such as drama, debating and bushwalking). Almost every major nationality on campus has a club, including French, Chinese, Spanish and Japanese, to name a few.

Macquarie’s student-run Study Abroad and Exchange club, “Club Exchange” is also active on campus. “Club Ex” as it’s known, organizes fun events for local and international students, including visits to major sporting events, dolphin cruises and winery tours.

With the Macquarie University Sport and Aquatic Centre on campus, students are spoilt for choice of fun and physical activities. You can also join team sports such as badminton, rugby, soccer and basketball; hit the slopes with the ski club; get out on the water with the rowing club; take to the hills with the bushwalking club; or get involved with the fast-paced and physical Ultimate Frisbee club.

The Centre also includes squash courts, a basketball hall, sports hall, badminton courts and a martial arts area – so there’s something for everyone. Students also have the opportunity to participate in various recreation activities such as snow skiing, surfing, skydiving and scuba diving. On top of this, the short course program gives you the chance to try new activities including fencing, golf, salsa and tennis.
 

Community Involvement

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program. The program includes pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Conservation Volunteer Weekend.

Enhance Your Experience

Global Identity Course

While studying at Macquarie University, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the Global Identity course (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.

This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. LEARN MORE>

 

Global Citizens Development Modules

The Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory, however we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication.

Fee Includes

Program Fees: As a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad study abroad participant, you will be required to enroll as a full-time student; typically this is 3-4 classes, which is equivalent to 12-16 U.S. semester credit hours. Your program fees are in U.S. dollars and include the host university semester tuition for 4 subjects, university administrative fees, overseas health insurance, the Basic ISIC card, our renowned Bridging Cultures Program on-site orientation and the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Personalized Support and Service.


With GlobaLinks Learning Abroad you will receive Personalized Support and Service through our four point philosophy to manage your program:

1.) Personal Program Selection & Planning: Personal service & advising, academic planning and credit transfer assistance, program location, housing advice, financial assistance.

2.) Pre and Post Orientation and Preparation: Our MyLearn on-line enrollment information and process, comprehensive program information and departure webinar, immigration visa support and advice, airline ticket and group flight assistance, global citizen development modules.

3.) Cultural Integration: On-site Bridging Cultures Program, on-site resident director services and advising, academic support, guaranteed housing and placement, volunteer and community involvement opportunities.

4.) Reflection and Application of the Experience: Beyond Study Abroad Program, The EnCompass Alumni Program, program evaluation opportunity, resume building and review, alumni handbook and transcript services. 

Housing Fees: The Housing Fees are approximates and are in addition to the Program Fees. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad offers you “Housing to Fit Your Lifestyle” and you are guaranteed a placement in a wide variety of quality housing options to accommodate your academic, personal and budgetary needs during your experience abroad. The housing fees listed indicate an approximate cost for the options available on that program which may represent apartments/flats, houses and/or dormitories/residential halls, living within the local community or on-campus with locals and other international students. Private single rooms are standard (although double rooms are available) and are fully furnished, including comfort amenities with access to internet and telephone. Students who choose to arrange their own accommodation upon arrival will be charged the Program Fee only, as they will be responsible for making payment directly to the housing provider once accommodation has been arranged.

Additional Subject & Gym Membership Fees: Additional charges may apply for science, media, fine arts, or journalism subjects at some universities and students who undertake subjects where the university requires additional fees will be billed directly by the home university upon final enrolment. Gym and student union memberships are optional to students. If you wish to join, you may do so on arrival by contacting the international office at your host university.

Caroline manages study abroad admission and participant pre-trip services to Australian National University, Macquarie University, University of Canberra, University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, UTS-Sydney, University of Wollongong and University of Tasmania.

Caroline graduated from Colorado State University with a B.A. in Public Relations with a minor in Business. Through her study abroad travels she studied at Bond University on the Gold Coast of Australia. While abroad her travels included the east coast of Australia and the South Island of New Zealand.
