GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, formerly known as AustraLearn, offers semester and year abroad programs at UTS-Sydney. As a key member of the Australian Technology Network, a prestigious coalition of five leading Australian universities, UTS-Sydney offers contemporary and innovative education in the center of Australia’s most exciting city, Sydney.
In 2008, UTS-Sydney was rated top for Learning and Teaching by the Australian Government (Australian Commonwealth Government Learning and Teaching Performance Fund 2008). This means that UTS-Sydney is one of only two Australian universities to be rated top for all teaching discipline areas.
UTS-Sydney courses are developed in consultation with industry partners and leading professionals, and provide a unique balance between theory and practice. UTS-Sydney has a truly global community, with over 30,000 students, including more than 5000 international students from over 116 countries on campus.

UTS-Sydney is located in central Sydney, adjacent to the city’s vibrant commercial and cultural hub and surrounded by the cosmopolitan districts of Darling Harbor and Chinatown. A network of creative inner city villages is a short walk away. An underground walkway connects UTS-Sydney to Sydney’s Central Railway station providing students with direct access to the city’s beaches and outer suburbs through Sydney’s public transport network.
Around the University
UTS-Sydney is located in central Sydney next door to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Television and Radio studios and is a short walk from the country’s largest museum of Design and Technology, the “Powerhouse Museum”. The City campus is adjacent to Sydney’s Chinatown which is home to an enormous range of Asian restaurants and specialty stores. The historic “Paddy’s Market” is across the road from the UTS-Sydney – this is where you will find the largest supply of fresh food and vegetables in central Sydney and where you can also pick up bargain souvenirs before you return home. Sydney’s creative design district of Surry Hills, is another neighboring village. The entertainment precinct of Darling Harbor is also a short walk away. Academic HighlightsStudy Abroad students can choose to enroll in a group of subjects from one major discipline or can combine subjects from any of the following areas of study:

University ServicesUTS-Sydney offers its international students the benefits of all its student services. This includes study support, prayer room facilities, student and career counseling, health and housing services, sporting facilities, a peer support network, and a student tandem program where you can meet Australian and other international students on campus.
Also available are:
- The University library with over 650,000 books, journals and audiovisual items, plus an International Cultural and News Center (ICNC).
- Over 800 computers for student use as well as specialized faculty laboratories, with 24-hour access to computers on the City campus. Free wireless internet access is available to all enrolled students on both the City and Kuring-gai campuses.
- Specialist Learning Assistance centers for students undertaking Chemistry, Engineering, Design, Mathematics, Physics, and Education.
- New and second hand bookshops, stationery and arts supplies shops, cafes, bars, news agencies, and other retailers on campus.
- UTS-Sydney Union Fitness Centre and an underground multi-purpose sports hall under development.
- The UTS-Sydney Union organizes concerts, films, barbeques, creative leisure courses, art exhibitions, plays, lunchtime speakers, and social events throughout semester.
HousingAs a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad student you are guaranteed pre-arranged accommodation to fit your lifestyle. There are a variety of housing options available which you will apply for after acceptance. Read below for more specific options offered at this university:
Students attending UTS-Sydney are offered pre-arranged housing in shared apartments. Apartments are furnished and self-catered. UTS-Sydney strives to provide housing arrangements that help to promote a positive lifestyle to enrich their academic and personal growth while abroad. OrientationIn addition to the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program which is included in your program fees UTS-Sydney organizes a comprehensive UTS-Sydney Orientation Program for new students before each semester. This program is designed to familiarize new students with the university's services and facilities and to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of living and studying in central Sydney.
The orientation week is supported by UTS-Sydney staff and the “Peer Network”, a large group of experienced UTS-Sydney students who volunteer to make sure that new international students can get the most out of their UTS-Sydney experience.
The Orientation Program includes a series of campus tours, faculty welcomes, and academic counseling sessions, social activities on and around the campus and optional short trips and adventure programs. You will also be given detailed advice about how to make enrollment changes, academic expectations, working in Australia, and fulfilling your student visa obligations.
Special Programs/ExcursionsThe UTS-Sydney Union Recreation and Adventure programs cater to all UTS-Sydney students’ capabilities and interests. UTS-Sydney students have Sydney at their doorstep. The restaurants of Chinatown, shopping arcades, major museums, theatres, waterfront parks, and the pubs and clubs of the inner city are all an easy walk from the campus.
On campus, UTS-Sydney students can join more than 90 cultural, sporting, and social clubs and societies, ranging from Bollywood to Ultimate Frisbee! UTS-Sydney has a newly refurbished Fitness Center and our students regularly excel in national and international sporting competitions. The UTS-Sydney rowing club based on Sydney Harbor is regarded as one of the finest in Australia.
With an active Student Association, UTS-Sydney encourages students to participate and be heard. The University’s student newspaper, Vertigo, is always recruiting new writers, artists and editors and Sydney’s most dynamic independent radio station, 2SER FM, is presented and broadcasted by UTS-Sydney students.
If you prefer to spend your time skydiving, white-water rafting, horse riding, sailing, or mountain biking, the UTS-Sydney Union Recreation and Adventure programs are a great way to explore and make new friends outside the classroom. Catering to beginners and advanced adventurers, programs range from half-day excursions to 12-day trips all over Australia, set at a reasonable price for students.
Community Involvement
While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program. The program includes pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Conservation Volunteer Weekend.
   Enhance Your Experience
Global Identity Course
While studying at UTS-Sydney, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the Global Identity course (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.
This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. LEARN MORE>
Global Citizens Development Modules
The Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory, however we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication.

Fee IncludesProgram Fees: As a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad study abroad participant, you will be required to enroll as a full-time student; typically this is 3-4 classes, which is equivalent to 12-16 U.S. semester credit hours. Your program fees are in U.S. dollars and include the host university semester tuition for 4 subjects, university administrative fees, overseas health insurance, the Basic ISIC card, our renowned Bridging Cultures Program on-site orientation and the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Personalized Support and Service. With GlobaLinks Learning Abroad you will receive Personalized Support and Service through our four point philosophy to manage your program:
1.) Personal Program Selection & Planning: Personal service & advising, academic planning and credit transfer assistance, program location, housing advice, financial assistance.
2.) Pre and Post Orientation and Preparation: Our MyLearn on-line enrollment information and process, comprehensive program information and departure webinar, immigration visa support and advice, airline ticket and group flight assistance, global citizen development modules.
3.) Cultural Integration: On-site Bridging Cultures Program, on-site resident director services and advising, academic support, guaranteed housing and placement, volunteer and community involvement opportunities.
4.) Reflection and Application of the Experience: Beyond Study Abroad Program, The EnCompass Alumni Program, program evaluation opportunity, resume building and review, alumni handbook and transcript services.
Housing Fees: The Housing Fees are approximates and are in addition to the Program Fees. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad offers you “Housing to Fit Your Lifestyle” and you are guaranteed a placement in a wide variety of quality housing options to accommodate your academic, personal and budgetary needs during your experience abroad. The housing fees listed indicate an approximate cost for the options available on that program which may represent apartments/flats, houses and/or dormitories/residential halls, living within the local community or on-campus with locals and other international students. Private single rooms are standard (although double rooms are available) and are fully furnished, including comfort amenities with access to internet and telephone. Students who choose to arrange their own accommodation upon arrival will be charged the Program Fee only, as they will be responsible for making payment directly to the housing provider once accommodation has been arranged.
Additional Subject & Gym Membership Fees: Additional charges may apply for science, media, fine arts, or journalism subjects at some universities and students who undertake subjects where the university requires additional fees will be billed directly by the home university upon final enrolment. Rebecca manages study abroad admissions and participant pre-trip services for students attending International College of Management Sydney (ICMS) University of the South Pacific, Bond University, and University of Newcastle. Rebecca graduated with a BA in International Relations and Spanish from St. Cloud State University, Minnesota in 2006. She studied abroad for a semester at La Universidad de Concepcion in Chile and was a participant in a short-term study abroad program to China. She has also traveled to Belgium, Mexico, Jamaica, Australia, Fiji, and the Canary Islands.
Advice From The Coordinator: UTS-Sydney is a great university option for students looking for an urban study abroad experience. The university is surrounded by a great variety of shops, museums, cafes, restaurants, and nightlife. Due to the large student population in the area, the options for those on a budget are plentiful! Students also looking for a multicultural city will be happy to know that Chinatown is a short walk away. |
