GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, formerly known as AustraLearn, offers semester and year abroad programs at the University of Western Australia. The University of Western Australia is the oldest institution of higher learning in Western Australia and a member of Australia's prestigious Group of Eight universities. Since 1911 UWA has helped shaped the careers of nearly 100,000 graduates.
The University's strong foundation in research and teaching creates a scholarly environment, which promotes the pursuit and rigorous critical interpretation of new information as well as the acquisition of knowledge. Its dual strengths of research and research training set the University apart as one of Australia's leading research-intensive universities. Responsible for almost 70% of the university-based research and development in Western Australia, UWA is ranked third for research in Australia on a per capita basis.
UWA is ranked second in Australia for the quality of its undergraduate programs with the highest quality undergraduates of any university in Australia. UWA has a tradition of thinking globally and preparing its students to be citizens of the globe. This spirit of internationalism promotes a lively exchange of staff, students, knowledge and ideas, and a multi-cultural and multi-faith community, which includes more than 4,912 international students from 80 nations.
Situated on the banks of the Swan River only five kilometers from Perth city center, UWA is among the most picturesque in the nation with its grand sandstone and terracotta buildings sitting among elegant heritage-listed gardens. It is a member of the Elite Athlete Friendly University network and a major sponsor of the UWA Perth International Arts Festival.
UWA offers an integrated study experience where short-term students study alongside degree-seeking students, enjoying all the same benefits and privileges but with more freedom to design their own study program. Students may select any unit which is part of a regular degree program (except for Medicine and Dentistry), subject to meeting pre-requisites and may study at the undergraduate or graduate level.

The main campus at Crawley is located just 10 minutes from the central business district of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. Academics HighlightsUWA offers comprehensive learning programs for undergraduates and postgraduates across nine faculties and the School of Indigenous Studies. These faculties are: Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts; Humanities and Social Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering; Computing and Mathematics; Law; Life and Physical Sciences; Medicine, Dentistry and Health Services; Natural and Agricultural Sciences.
Apart from the regular delivery of information (lectures, tutorials, supervised research, field trips, and student placements), the University also provides students with opportunities to apply their knowledge on collaborative projects with business, industry, government and the wider community.
UWA was the first university in Australia to offer a degree course in environmental engineering and, more recently, in ocean systems and climate studies. These courses are pioneering the education of sustainable development of the earth and its oceans.
UWA joins a list of prestigious universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, UC Berkeley, and Kyoto in offering Integrated Human Studies or cognate courses through the Centre for Integrated Human Studies. The Centre brings together experts including psychologists, physiologists, anthropologists, medical scientists, human ecologists, economists, and marketing researchers to assess the mix and relative importance of different factors contributing to problems such as obesity.

University ServicesUWA is committed to providing high quality service so that students can take full advantage of all the opportunities on offer at UWA and deal with any challenges that may arise during their period of study.
The Study Abroad office which is part of the the International Centre is the principal point of contact for study abroad and exchange students. It provides on-going support to students on matters of general welfare such as health insurance, visa, financial assistance etc and special services such as free airport pickup and orientation in both semesters.
In addition the University provides a range of student services including Careers Centre, Housing Service, Financial Aid Service, Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Learning, Language and Research Skills resources, Medical Centre, Child Care service and Chaplaincy. The Diversity and Transition Services to help new students settle into the University.
The Learning, Language and Research Skills service provides peer learning groups, workshops, resources, individual appointments, podcasts, online tutorials, discussion boards, access to friendship groups. A dedicated services for students with a disability or medical condition is available through UniAccess: UWA's Disability Office.HousingAs a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad student you are guaranteed pre-arranged accommodation to fit your lifestyle. There are a variety of housing options available which you will apply for after acceptance. Read below for more specific options offered at this university:
On campus housing - 5 affiliated residential colleges located adjacent to the University & providing housing for more than 1,000 students. All colleges are co-ed except for one, which is for women only.
Off-campus housing - The university provides the "Housing Database", which is a self serve facility allowing enrolled students to view property listings and make their selections accordingly. Information and advice on housing issues, including understanding leases, bonds, tenancy law and the costs involved with establishing a household is also offered. The service is free and confidential service to enrolled students. OrientationIn addition to the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program which is included in your program fees the University of Western Australia will provide a university specific orientation. Each semester an orientation program is arranged specifically for study abroad and exchange students. This program provides essential information about studying at UWA and living in Perth as well as opportunities to meet other international students and UWA students.
During Orientation students will meet with academic staff to formalize study plans through the enrollment process, gain more information about academic and general issues, familiarise themselves with the campus and the city through optional tours and social activities.
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the general university orientation program for all new students to the University. At the beginning of the academic year (February/March), the general university orientation is a great experience and feels like a huge festival with all the different clubs and societies in full swing. Enhance Your Experience While studying at UWA, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the Global Identity course (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.

Global Citizens Development Modules
The new Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory, however we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication.

Fee IncludesProgram Fees: As a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad study abroad participant, you will be required to enroll as a full-time student; typically this is 3-4 classes, which is equivalent to 12-16 U.S. semester credit hours. Your program fees are in U.S. dollars and include the host university semester tuition for 4 subjects, university administrative fees, overseas health insurance, the Basic ISIC card, our renowned Bridging Cultures Program on-site orientation and the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Personalized Support and Service. With GlobaLinks Learning Abroad you will receive Personalized Support and Service through our four point philosophy to manage your program:
1.) Personal Program Selection & Planning: Personal service & advising, academic planning and credit transfer assistance, program location, housing advice, financial assistance.
2.) Pre and Post Orientation and Preparation: Our MyLearn on-line enrollment information and process, comprehensive program information and departure webinar, immigration visa support and advice, airline ticket and group flight assistance, global citizen development modules.
3.) Cultural Integration: On-site Bridging Cultures Program, on-site resident director services and advising, academic support, guaranteed housing and placement, volunteer and community involvement opportunities.
4.) Reflection and Application of the Experience: Beyond Study Abroad Program, The EnCompass Alumni Program, program evaluation opportunity, resume building and review, alumni handbook and transcript services.
Housing Fees: The Housing Fees are approximates and are in addition to the Program Fees. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad offers you “Housing to Fit Your Lifestyle” and you are guaranteed a placement in a wide variety of quality housing options to accommodate your academic, personal and budgetary needs during your experience abroad. The housing fees listed indicate an approximate cost for the options available on that program which may represent apartments/flats, houses and/or dormitories/residential halls, living within the local community or on-campus with locals and other international students. Private single rooms are standard (although double rooms are available) and are fully furnished, including comfort amenities with access to internet and telephone. Students who choose to arrange their own accommodation upon arrival will be charged the Program Fee only, as they will be responsible for making payment directly to the housing provider once accommodation has been arranged.
Additional Subject & Gym Membership Fees: Additional charges may apply for science, media, fine arts, or journalism subjects at some universities and students who undertake subjects where the university requires additional fees will be billed directly by the home university upon final enrolment. Gym and student union memberships are optional to students. If you wish to join, you may do so on arrival by contacting the international office at your host university. Entry RequirementsApplicants must have the required GPA and have completed at least the equivalent of one year of full-time study at the university/college level.
Students with a lower GPA than the requirement may be considered on a case by case basis. Please contact our office for more information.

Rebecca manages study abroad admissions and participant pre-trip services for students attending International College of Management Sydney (ICMS) University of the South Pacific, Bond University, and University of Newcastle. Rebecca graduated with a BA in International Relations and Spanish from St. Cloud State University, Minnesota in 2006. She studied abroad for a semester at La Universidad de Concepcion in Chile and was a participant in a short-term study abroad program to China. She has also traveled to Belgium, Mexico, Jamaica, Australia, Fiji, and the Canary Islands. |
