CQUniversity - Semester or Year Abroad

Overview

CQUniversity (CQU) is one of Australia’s most dynamic universities with a rich cultural diversity. CQU students earn quality degrees and benefit from increased job opportunities. Its courses and programs are modeled on teaching and learning excellence, flexibility, and personal service.

CQUniversity has over 20,000 students (spread across all campuses) from over 88 countries. Students succeed because of the five-star quality and relevancy of teaching, learning, research and community programs and services. CQUniversity personalized learning support, collaborative partnerships and dedicated staff provide pathways for people anywhere, with different learning styles to achieve, thrive and succeed.

At CQUniversity you have access to the “Real Australia” – the bush and the beach – at CQU’s main campus in Rockhampton. Both are only about 30 minutes away from campus. CQU Rockhampton is where the academic management, the main library and main sporting facilities of the university are based. The students have the opportunity to get up-close and personal with kangaroos, wallabies, and other Australian wildlife that are found on campus and explore one of the most unique environments offered anywhere in the world.

While studying at CQUniversity, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the new Global Identity subject (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.

This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying in Australia with AustraLearn. LEARN MORE>

Location

CQUniversity campuses are located in three Australian states – Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria in nine beautiful, yet diverse, cities. Our Queensland campuses are located on Australia 's tropical east coast - 'where the outback meets the reef' - offering quality service and a multicultural lifestyle. All students studying abroad with AustraLearn will attend the CQU's main campus in Rockhampton, Queensland.

"Where the Outback meets the Reef"

Rockhampton has a population of 60,000 and is located on the east coast of Australia, on the Tropic of Capricorn, 633 kilometers north of Brisbane. You can travel to Rockhampton from Brisbane by either of the following:
  • 1 hour by plane
  • 7 hours by train or car
  • 13 hours by bus
Rockhampton is just a 30-minute drive to the Capricorn Coast and Yeppoon beaches. Spectacular Great Keppel Island on the Great Barrier Reef is a 30-minute cruise from Roslyn Bay Marina. West of Rockhampton lie significant parts of Australia's heritage such as outback cattle and sheep stations, vast open-cut and underground coal mines and gem fields and national parks including Carnarvon National Park, famous for its ancient Aboriginal rock art. The tropical climate makes Rockhampton and its surrounding area ideal for outdoor pursuits such as bushwalking, camping, horse riding, swimming, scuba diving, wind surfing, sailing, and snorkeling.

Extracurricular Activities

Campus facilities include a swimming pool and gym, playing fields, baseball diamond, tennis and basketball courts, to name a few. Perhaps you may like to try something new such as "rugby," "netball," or "cricket". CQU teams compete in golf, squash, cycling, and volleyball, and the scuba club offers discount dive courses to students through fully accredited instructors.

Weekends find students learning to scuba dive, visiting the Dreamtime Aboriginal Cultural Center, adventure caving, overnight horseback riding, spending the night under the stars, or just lazing by the beach. CQU Student Services staff is happy to assist with planning any activities students wish to experience during their stay.

The on-campus travel agency, TravelCrew, will help to plan vacation travel itineraries if needed and can assist with bookings as well as offer planned holiday packages.

Orientation

Students are met by our reception service and transported to their accommodation. A full range of academic and welfare support services is available to international students through CQU Student Services. A special orientation program for all international students is conducted at the beginning of each semester. During this time, students are provided with information about living in Australia to help make the transition as easy as possible. Students are also taken on a tour of the local area. In addition, students are encouraged to take part in all the fun and frolics of ‘O’ Week for all students.

Community Involvement

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in Rockhampton or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on AustraLearn's Culture and Adventure Program. The program includes one day of pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for AustraLearn's Conservation Volunteer Weekend.

A word from our alumni
"The students at CQU were so nice. The campus was small enough that everyone would participate in events there...there was a ball, volleyball tourtaments, rugby games, and BBQ's. I had a lot of fun, became close to many people, and found lifelong friends. This was the best experience of my life, and I believe it had a great deal to do with the people that attended CQU and lived in Capricornia College."
