CQUniversity - Semester or Year Abroad

Overview

Central Queensland University (CQU) is one of Australia’s most dynamic universities with a rich culture diversity. CQU students earn quality degrees and benefit from increased job opportunities. CQU courses and programs are modeled on teaching and learning excellence, flexibility and personal service.

CQU is a five-star university, which means their students succeed. No other university in Australia rates higher for positive graduate outcomes, cultural diversity, and international enrollments. CQU is also ranked highly for getting a job and for graduate starting salaries.

The University’s 20,000 students (spread across all campuses, from over 100 countries) succeed because of the five-star rating of quality and relevancy of teaching, learning, research, and community programs and services. The personalized learning support, collaborative partnerships and excellent staff provide pathways for people anywhere, despite different learning styles, to achieve, thrive, and succeed.

CQU offers more than 45 undergraduate and 30 postgraduate programs, including research opportunities from the Faculties of Arts, Humanities and Education; Sciences, Engineering and Health; and Business and Informatics.

At CQU you have access to the “Real Australia” – the bush and the beach – at CQU’s main campus in Rockhampton. Both are only about 30 minutes away from campus. CQU Rockhampton is where the academic management, the main library and main sporting facilities of the university are based. The students have the opportunity to get up-close and personal with kangaroos, wallabies, and other Australian wildlife that are found on campus and explore one of the most unique environments offered anywhere in the world.

Location

"Where the Outback meets the Reef"
Rockhampton has a population of 60,000 and is located on the east coast of Australia, on the Tropic of Capricorn, 633 kilometers north of Brisbane. You can travel to Rockhampton from Brisbane by either of the following:
  • 1 hour by plane
  • 7 hours by train or car
  • 13 hours by bus
Rockhampton is just a 30-minute drive to the Capricorn Coast and Yeppoon beaches. Spectacular Great Keppel Island on the Great Barrier Reef is a 30-minute cruise from Roslyn Bay Marina. West of Rockhampton lie significant parts of Australia's heritage such as outback cattle and sheep stations, vast open-cut and underground coal mines and gem fields and national parks including Carnarvon National Park, famous for its ancient Aboriginal rock art. The tropical climate makes Rockhampton and its surrounding area ideal for outdoor pursuits such as bushwalking, camping, horse riding, swimming, scuba diving, wind surfing, sailing, and snorkeling.

Extracurricular Activities

Campus facilities include a swimming pool and gym, playing fields, baseball diamond, tennis and basketball courts, to name a few. Perhaps you may like to try something new such as "rugby," "netball," or "cricket". CQU teams compete in golf, squash, cycling, and volleyball, and the scuba club offers discount dive courses to students through fully accredited instructors.

Weekends find students learning to scuba dive, visiting the Dreamtime Aboriginal Cultural Center, adventure caving, overnight horseback riding, spending the night under the stars, or just lazing by the beach. CQU Student Services staff is happy to assist with planning any activities students wish to experience during their stay.

The on-campus travel agency, TravelCrew, will help to plan vacation travel itineraries if needed and can assist with bookings as well as offer planned holiday packages.

Housing

Capricornia College offers on-campus accommodation in a safe, supportive, and friendly environment. The College houses up to 320 male and female students in single rooms, with shared facilities and all meals provided. Benefits of living at the College include academic support services, access to sporting facilities, formal and casual functions/dinners, and recreational and social outings.

If desired, assistance will be given to help students find off-campus rental accommodation close to the University though transportation will need to be considered. To minimize costs, fully furnished rental accommodation would be preferable but you will need to consider added costs such as linen, crockery and cutlery, or a TV. We can also assist to find homestay accommodation for students wishing to spend time with an Australian family.

Orientation

Students are met by our reception service and transported to their accommodation. A full range of academic and welfare support services is available to international students through CQU Student Services. A special orientation program for all international students is conducted at the beginning of each semester. During this time, students are provided with information about living in Australia to help make the transition as easy as possible. Students are also taken on a tour of the local area. In addition, students are encouraged to take part in all the fun and frolics of ‘O’ Week for all students.
