Melbourne is also the leading Australian university for employability of graduates and received the highest score by an Australian university in the International Recruiter Index (2006). Among our many scholars of international standing are four winners of the Nobel Prize. Professors Peter Doherty and Bert Sakmann for Physiology and Medicine, and Professors Sir James Mirrlees and Clive Granger for their achievements in Economic Science. Our researchers are also at the forefront of international scholarship in fields as diverse as human rights law, chemical engineering (David Boger), and telecommunications research.
Location
One of the advantages of studying abroad at the University of Melbourne is the campus location. The campus is spacious, green, and leafy, and has a special life of its own, yet it is located within walking distance to downtown Melbourne, a vibrant diverse city full of art, culture, cafes, sport, and festivals.
Academic Highlights
The University of Melbourne is a comprehensive university which, for over a hundred years, was the only university in the state of Victoria;
hence there is a very strong academic basis for all the humanities, sciences, and professions. From 2008, the University will introduce a landmark educational reform known as The Melbourne Model. It is designed to create an outstanding and distinctive Melbourne Experience for all students. In moving to this model, the University is responding to the challenges of today's changing environment as well as aligning itself with the best of European and Asian practice and North American traditions. The model will be based, in most cases, on a range of 'new generation' undergraduate degrees, which will have academic breadth as well as depth of content. These degrees will prepare students both for the changing world of work and provide a pathway into professional graduate programs or research higher degrees.
