Science and Environmental Science Overview

Complete a Science, Research or Environmental Internship in Australia or New Zealand

Location: Any City in Australia or New Zealand

The rich diversity of the flora and fauna, topography, and ecosystems in Australia and New Zealand make both of these countries fascinating destinations for science related internships. Science and environmental internships are available in several locations in both Australia and New Zealand. These placements give students the opportunity to work with leading researchers and scientists in a wide array of topics. Past interns found themselves doing research in the areas of zoology, marine biology and ecology, environmental economics, conservation, genetics, medicine, natural resource management, and agricultural management. Placements can be found with government agencies, parks and recreation areas, non-profit organizations, research centers, and private companies.

Please see the current available placements in the navigation items on the left of this page. However, if none of those placements fit what you are looking for, just let us know and we will find one that does. During the application, you will write a cover letter that includes your goals and interests for your internship. Your AustraLearn Internship Coordinator will then work with you to match up your learning goals and interests with the best available internship placement.

Sustainablility

Sustainability Internship with National Walking Advocate

Location: Wellington, North Island, New Zealand

This organization is New Zealand’s national network of walking advocates, established in 1998, and incorporated in 2002. The organization works to advocate for, and to develop walking-friendly communities throughout New Zealand, and to promote the social, environmental and economic benefits of walking as a means of transport and recreation. Conservation Genetics

Benthic Invertebrate Conservation Research

Location: Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand

For many marine benthic invertebrates, dispersal over large distances is only possible during a pelagic larval phase. For coastal species, larvae are exported from inshore waters and develop over a period of weeks to months before returning to coastal habitats in late larval of early post-larval form. It is through the broadcasting of gametes that sedentary organisms can achieve genetic exchange between geographically separated subpopulations, colonise new or disturbed sites and avoid the genetic pitfalls associated with inbreeding, small population size and asexual reproduction. Little is known about the fate of larvae once they are released into the water column. While it is widely accepted that pre-settlement processes are of primary importance in shaping marine communities, the incorporation of pelagic larval processes into the management of fisheries in general and the marine environment as a whole has often been based on unproven assumptions and hydrodynamic models which may only bear an approximate resemblance to reality.  This organization is using population genetics to investigate how populations of benthic marine invertebrates are connected via the transport of their larvae.

As an intern on this project you will be involved in extracting DNA from marine invertebrates and amplifying the DNA for sequencing and fragment analysis. No experience in scientific research is necessary. You will be taught laboratory methodology and how genetic data can be used in ecosystem management. An effort will also be made to have you work in the field. Interns will also learn the value of scientific research for effective natural resource management and contribute towards to more effective management of the New Zealand’s marine environment.

Environmental Economics

Internship Opportunity Exploring the Economics of Environmental Protection

Location: Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia

This internship placement is at an environmental research center. The center works in association with regional primary and secondary industry to achieve environmentally sustainable development that is resilient within the highly seasonal and unpredictable Australian environment and is compatible with the ecology of wet/dry tropical Australia. Central Queensland has the largest river basin on the east coast of Australia and it drains into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. Issues of land management, mainly cattle, mining, agriculture and tourism within the catchment and the environmental impacts in inland, coastal and marine areas, are of prime concern. The social and cultural issues are also complex. The population of many rural towns is declining and some economic development is desirable, but the question is how do we trade-off these benefits with some of the environmental costs. New development may also have an impact on Aboriginal cultural heritage sites in the region. The issues are complex, and there is no simple solution, but economists offer one way of analyzing the situation that can include consideration of environmental, social and economic values.

This is a unique opportunity for an intern to gain an understanding of these complex issues in the Australian context, but also be provided with practical tools that are transferable to a situation in their own country. The intern will be working with a team of economists with skills and expertise in a range of economic areas, including environmental and resource economics, natural resource management, agricultural economics, and regional development. The principal area of research is in non-market valuation mainly to assess the value of environmental goods as well as other social services. The intern will gain a range of experience in data collection methods, such as focus groups, questionnaire surveys, experimental workshops, practical experience in the application of non-market valuation techniques, practical experience in the application of quantitative data analysis techniques (opportunities for more complex analysis are available if desired), a better understanding of the environmental issues in Australia and Queensland in particular. An intern would be directly involved in the collection and analysis of data and information relating to projects available at the time of internship.

Custom Date Australia or New Zealand

Design an Internship to Meet Your Specific Needs

Location: Any city in Australia or New Zealand

Custom Date Internship placements are available for students who are unable to participate in one of our PDAC placements for any one of the following reasons:

  • You do not meet the minimum GPA or college level requirements.
  • You cannot attend the program during the pre-set PDAC dates.
  • You need an internship of a duration other than 10 weeks.

AustraLearn Custom Date Internships are available in most every field of study. These one-of-a kind placements can accommodate a variety of start and end dates and program lengths of 6-26 weeks. In the required cover letter, applicants should detail the type of internship that they are seeking and their desired start and end dates. The success rate of these placements is very high, and students marvel at being able to intern with organizations that most closely mirror their desired experience.

In general, it is possible to start an AustraLearn Custom Date Internship at any time; however, applications must be completed at least four months prior to the desired internship start date. AustraLearn will try to match up these dates as closely as possible, but we suggest that the applicants have some flexibility.

Program fees vary with the actual finalized program length. Once you have submitted your completed application with all supporting documentation, including a specific cover letter, and have paid the initial deposit, our overseas staff members in Australia and New Zealand will find an internship placement to meet your needs. Your application MUST be received at least four months prior to your intended start date.

Most aspects of the custom date internship placements are the same as the PDAC placements. For instance, housing, on-site support services, and pre-departure services are similar across both types of programs. However, the custom designed internships do not include a Program Introduction because of the varying start dates for each placement. You will receive a welcome packet and an orientation phone call upon arrival in Australia or New Zealand. Additionally, custom designed internship placements do not carry credit from Chapman University; however, you can often arrange credit with your home university. You will want to speak with advisors at your home university about the processes and assessments they will require.

Name:Barbara West
Title:Manager, Internship Programs
Department:Internships in Australia and New Zealand
BIO:
Barbara manages the enrollment services and program facilitation of the Internship Program.

Advice From The Coordinator:
International internships look incredibly impressive on your resume, especially when they’re the type of quality placement that AustraLearn provides. Interns get practical experience in their chosen field and are not subject to the busy work that many employers request when they know they have free labor. The integrity of the program is never compromised and students gain a wealth of cultural and professional knowledge; knowledge that is very marketable when they begin their career. Internships are an excellent option for students looking to get both work and international experience at the same time and at an affordable price.
A word from our alumni
