| One of the many benefits of studying abroad with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad is our Bridging Cultures Program. For students spending a semester in New Zealand, the Bridging Cultures Program will be held in Auckland and Rotorua, New Zealand. This 6-day experiential learning opportunity is your Bridging Cultures Program in New Zealand and is included in your program fee. We will introduce you to your host country through a series of sessions, excursions, and community involvement opportunities. You will learn from locals about academic and cultural differences, participate in local excursions, and have the opportunity to volunteer in the local community. You will also meet a network of other students, and make a ton of memories in some of the most exciting and beautiful places on earth. By the end of this outstanding orientation, you will be prepared for a successful semester abroad in New Zealand. Session Topics: - New Zealand Culture – How is New Zealand different from North America?
- Health and Safety Abroad – Gain information related to New Zealand laws and infrastructure.
- New Zealand Education System – Gain insight on the expectations of Kiwi professors and institutions.
- Cultural Adjustment – What to expect from yourself in your new environment.
- Living in New Zealand - How do you open a bank account? What time is it at home? How do I call mom and dad to let them know I'm ok? Although it may seem basic we'll cover these topics and more to make sure you're ready to really LIVE in New Zealand, not just visit.
Excursions: Excursions can vary and can change at any time; however, the following activities are typically included in each Bridging Cultures Program: Auckland Spend a day in New Zealand's largest city, Auckland (population 1.4 million) and visit the Auckland Harbour and New Zealand's tallest structure - The Sky Tower (think Seattle Space Needle but BETTER!). Tamaki Maori Village Meet the native people of New Zealand, the Maori, for a look into their remarkable culture. You're group will choose a Chief to guide your Waka (traditional Maori canoe - in our case, a bus) to the Tamaki village. From there you'll experience an ancient Maori welcome, traditional songs and dances and eat some of the best food you'll have during your time in New Zealand at the traditional Maori feast - the Hangi. The Haka A traditional Maori war dance, the Haka is a staple of New Zealand culture. You'll see children performing the Haka specific to their school or region, you'll see the national rugby team, The All Blacks, challenging every competitor before every game with it, and now - YOU get to learn it. Waitomo Caves Have you ever rappelled down waterfalls, crawled through caverns or zip-lined underground in complete darkness? Here's your chance! The Waitomo Caves excursion is your chance to see New Zealand on a different level. Adventure Day! Now that you've checked "See a Kiwi", "Enjoy a Hangi", "Volunteer", "Visit Auckland" and "Check out some Caves" off of your list, it's time for a free day! Spend time exploring Rotorua or book one of our exciting excursions like White Water Rafting, Zorbing, Luging and More! Community Day Program As a student in New Zealand it's important to give back to and interact with the community that will give you so much over your semester abroad. Therefore AustraLearn has developed a one-day volunteer project for our students during the Culture and Adventure Program. This is a great opportunity to meet and work alongside locals to improve the local environment! the past our volunteers have worked with local schools, arranged a fundraiser, and worked to beautify the local community. Other Higlights: Along with your sessions and excursions you’ll also enjoy social time with other students who will be attending the same university – a great chance to really get to know other students prior to arriving at the university. Plus, you will gain exposure to a unique region of New Zealand and even have some free time to explore the fabulous city of Rotorua. Our overall goal during the Bridging Cultures Program is to ensure that you are able and ready to fully immerse yourself into the New Zealand or Fiji culture so that your study abroad experience is truly meaningful and memorable.
