Canberra's Attractions

While you'll never see wild kangaroos hopping down the streets of Sydney or Melbourne, they have been known to appear just a minute or two from Canberra’s city center. And because Canberra is a compact city, right in the middle of sheep country, a twenty-minute drive can have you watching shearers at work and enjoying a "billy" of tea. Australia's highest mountain, Mt. Kosciuszko, and our beautiful Pacific coastlines are also only a couple of hours drive from Canberra, while half an hour in the air or three hours on the road can have you in Sydney.

The Snowy Mountains

Within a two hour drive from Canberra, the Snowy region provides opportunities for a wide range of activities in both summer and winter. The area is best known for skiing but offers much more. Have you ever thought of snow shoeing across Australia's High Country or even trying your hand at mountaineering? As the snow melts in spring there is even more to do. Whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain bike riding and horse riding are among the many activities available.

The region's national parks and state forests provide an enormous area for mountain adventures. Kosciuszko National Park is one of the most significant Alpine Parks in the world. Thredbo, a small European-style village located within the National Park, is the ideal base in the mountains and is widely recognized as Australia's best year round alpine resort.
