Location

Brisbane

Brisbane, the capital of Queensland and Australia’s ‘Smart State’, is widely known as the country’s most livable city. A major business hub, Brisbane is Australia’s fastest growing capital and offers a safe, friendly, multicultural environment for international students. The inner city is characterized by the Brisbane River, parklands, convention facilities, museums, art galleries, a casino, malls, shopping districts and a host of cosmopolitan restaurants and cafés.

Just an hour away are the golden beaches of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, along with imposing national park rainforests. Brisbane is also the gateway to some of the world’s most beautiful natural attractions, including Fraser Island, the Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsunday Islands, and the Daintree Rainforest

St Lucia campus (main campus)

The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus is the University’s largest campus and considered to be Australia's most attractive. UQ St Lucia is situated in Brisbane, a dynamic capital city known for its excellent climate, high standard of living and secure quality of life. Located seven kilometres from the city’s heart, on a magnificent 114-hectare site in a bend of the Brisbane River, the campus has expansive landscaped grounds and many playing fields. The campus has easy access to and from the city via frequent buses and the City Cat river ferry. The majestic sandstone buildings give the campus an intellectual feel while its sprawling parklands, abundant wildlife, and multiple sporting fields offer reprieve from the rigors of academia. Its hub is a semi-circle of cloistered buildings enclosing the National Trust-listed Great Court.

Extracurricular Activities

UQ Sport provides access to every sport and activity you could imagine – from ice hockey to abseiling. One of the highlights is the annual Great Court Race. Residential colleges have inter-college competitions not only in sport, but also in debating and cultural events, combining to produce plays and musicals.

There are many social events held both within the colleges and on the campus, which include formal dances, barbecues, sporting competitions, and other cultural activities. UQ has more than 130 clubs and societies for every interest from chocolate and Legos to religion and politics.

Academic Highlights

UQ was also recently ranked 43rd in the world in a recent ranking compiled by the prestigious Times Higher Education Supplement. In addition to this, the University has won more Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) than any other university and was awarded the maximum five-star rating in three major categories, research grants, research intensiveness, and toughness to get in (St Lucia campus) by the Australian Good Universities Guide 2009.

Community Involvement

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in Brisbane or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on AustraLearn's Culture and Adventure Program. The program includes one day of pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for AustraLearn's Conservation Volunteer Weekend.

A word from our alumni
"I took an Australia's Marine Environment class that included a 5 day field trip to Heron Island. The island was my favorite place in all of Australia. We snorkeled two or three times a day, every day. We even went on a night snorkel with torches where we saw heaps of huge sea turtles. I also swam with huge rays and sharks. The beach is perfect and the sand is white. At night, you can see the milky way. I could live there forever."
