Internship Details

Students selected to participate in the internship through the International College of Management, Sydney will commence their program abroad approximately one month prior to their participation in the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program.

The internship is an unpaid, 38 hour per week position spanning three weeks of time. Students wishing to experience the internship program must be Hospitality or Event Management majors with prior experience in the industry. Only 15 placements available and this study/internship program is only available during the February term.

This internship program is meant to give students an inside look at the varying characteristics of hotels located in distinct regions

Participants will spend a few short days at ICMS where they will take a required test to complete their eligibility to work at venues serving alcohol. The Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) course is designed to provide staff with the knowledge and awareness necessary to responsibly serve alcohol on licensed premises.

Once students reach their first hotel destination, they will begin shadowing the management in their daily activities. As part of the internship, participants will keep a journal documenting their experiences and reflecting upon the style of service provided in the various hotel departments. Students are required to bring a laptop computer to complete the journaling process.

Students will have a week to independently travel or relax at the conclusion of their program before they are required to be in Cairns for the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program.

While ICMS does not provide credit for the internship component of the Study Internship Combo at ICMS, students can often arrange credit with the home university. Students will need to speak with advisors at the home university about the processes and assessments required to obtain credit in this manner.

Get Involved Abroad

Extracurricular Activities

At ICMS, we don’t expect you to spend your entire semester with your head buried in a book! The College’s rich social and sporting life is there to be enjoyed. Activities include basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and soccer.

You can also take advantage of weekend trips to the snow fields, Central Coast, and Blue Mountains. For an adrenalin rush, you can even try indoor rock climbing, sky diving, white water rafting, sailing, fishing, surfing, scuba diving, and horse riding – to name a few.

The Student Club at ICMS holds themed events on campus often. These events include talent shows, karaoke, Asian food festivals, and Brazilian Carnival nights. For the more classically minded, there are opportunities to attend concerts and plays in Sydney theatres, open-air venues, and even the Sydney Opera House.

Community Involvement

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in Sydney or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program. The program includes one day of pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Conservation Volunteer Weekend.

Enhance Your Experience

Global Identity Course

While studying at ICMS, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the Global Identity course (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.

This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. LEARN MORE>

Global Citizens Development Modules

The Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory, however we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication.
