The internship component available at ICMS is a unique 3 week opportunity to experience a variety of hospitality settings. Eligible students will have experience in the hospitality industry already as these placements are meant to provide exposure to a multitude of settings for those individuals who have already learned the basics of the industry. Participants will rotate through three different hotel settings: city, country, and beach-side. Participants will spend one week at each location shadowing the manager and various hotel positions. The aim of the rotations is to provide participants with insight into the nuances of each hotel region.LocationICMS is located in a beautiful heritage-listed, sandstone building overlooking Manly Beach. It would be hard to find a college in a more spectacular position. To the north, there are views of the Pacific Ocean stretching to the New South Wales Central Coast. Southwards, the College has sweeping views of Sydney Harbor, which many consider to be the most beautiful in the world. The campus is a five-minute walk to Manly Beach and shopping precinct with its cafes, restaurants, and shopping. ICMS is also close enough to the city – 15 minutes by fast ferry – for visits to art galleries, museums, the historic Rocks area, the best city shops, and even the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge.
Internships will take place in three different types of locations: a beach-side hotel, a hotel in the city and a hotel in the country. Each will be within driving distance from the International College of Management, Sydney in the New South Wales area.Internship DetailsStudents selected to participate in the internship through the International College of Management, Sydney will commence their program abroad approximately one month prior to their participation in the AustraLearn Program Introduction. The internship is an un-paid, 38 hour per week position spanning three weeks of time. Students wishing to experience the internship program must be Hospitality or Event Management majors with prior experience in the industry.
This internship program is meant to give students an inside look at the varying characteristics of hotels located in distinct regions. Students will experience one week of working in each hotel location including a beach setting, city site, and country locale.
Participants will spend a few short days at ICMS where they will take a required test to complete their eligibility to work at venues serving alcohol. The Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) course is designed to provide staff with the knowledge and awareness necessary to responsibly serve alcohol on licensed premises.
Once students reach their first hotel destination, they will begin shadowing the management in their daily activities. As part of the internship, participants will keep a journal documenting their experiences and reflecting upon the style of service provided at the various locations. Students are required to bring a laptop computer to complete the journaling process.
Students will have a week to independently travel or relax at the conclusion of their program before they are required to be in Cairns for the AustraLearn Program Introduction.
While ICMS does not provide credit for the internship component of the Study Internship Combo at ICMS, students can often arrange credit with the home university. Students will need to speak with advisors at the home university about the processes and assessments required to obtain credit in this manner.HousingInternship participants will stay in a room at the hotel property at which they are working each week. Rooms will be equipped with hotel amenities including linens. Students will be provided with breakfast and the meal associated with their shift for the day.
