Internship Component
The internship component available at ICMS is a unique 3 week opportunity to experience a variety of hospitality settings. Eligible students will have experience in the hospitality industry already as these placements are meant to provide exposure to a multitude of settings for those individuals who have already learned the basics of the industry. Participants will rotate through three different hotel departments. Participants will spend one week in each department shadowing the manager and various hotel positions. The aim of the rotations is to provide participants with insight into the nuances of each departmental area.
 While studying at International College of Management, Sydney, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the new Global Identity subject (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.
This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying in Australia with AustraLearn. LEARN MORE>LocationICMS is located in a beautiful heritage-listed, sandstone building overlooking Manly Beach. It would be hard to find a college in a more spectacular position. To the north, there are views of the Pacific Ocean stretching to the New South Wales Central Coast. Southwards, the College has sweeping views of Sydney Harbor, which many consider to be the most beautiful in the world.
The campus is a five-minute walk to Manly Beach and shopping precinct with its cafes, restaurants, and shopping. ICMS is also close enough to downtown Sydney – 15 minutes by fast ferry – for visits to art galleries, museums, the historic Rocks area, the best city shops, and even the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge. Internship DetailsStudents selected to participate in the internship through the International College of Management, Sydney will commence their program abroad approximately one month prior to their participation in the AustraLearn Program Introduction.
The internship is an unpaid, 38 hour per week position spanning three weeks of time. Students wishing to experience the internship program must be Hospitality or Event Management majors with prior experience in the industry.
This internship program is meant to give students an inside look at the varying characteristics of hotels located in distinct regions.
Participants will spend a few short days at ICMS where they will take a required test to complete their eligibility to work at venues serving alcohol. The Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) course is designed to provide staff with the knowledge and awareness necessary to responsibly serve alcohol on licensed premises.
Once students reach their first hotel destination, they will begin shadowing the management in their daily activities. As part of the internship, participants will keep a journal documenting their experiences and reflecting upon the style of service provided in the various hotel departments. Students are required to bring a laptop computer to complete the journaling process.
Students will have a week to independently travel or relax at the conclusion of their program before they are required to be in Cairns for the AustraLearn Program Introduction.
While ICMS does not provide credit for the internship component of the Study Internship Combo at ICMS, students can often arrange credit with the home university. Students will need to speak with advisors at the home university about the processes and assessments required to obtain credit in this manner.HousingStudy Abroad students at ICMS have on-campus and off-campus accommodation options. On-campus rooms are equipped with desk/study facilities, heating and a telephone with voicemail, and have all linen provided. Each floor is equipped with common bathrooms and toilets, and a kitchenette you can use to make a quick snack. Off-campus accommodation options includes homestay (limited) and apartment living.Extracurricular ActivitiesAt ICMS, we don’t expect you to spend your entire semester with your head buried in a book! The College’s rich social and sporting life is there to be enjoyed. Activities include basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, and soccer.
You can also take advantage of weekend trips to the snow fields, Central Coast, and Blue Mountains. For an adrenalin rush, you can even try indoor rock climbing, sky diving, white water rafting, sailing, fishing, surfing, scuba diving, and horse riding – to name a few.
The Student Club at ICMS holds themed events on campus often. These events include talent shows, karaoke, Asian food festivals, and Brazilian Carnival nights. For the more classically minded, there are opportunities to attend concerts and plays in Sydney theatres, open-air venues, and even the Sydney Opera House.Academic HighlightsICMS is highly regarded by industry professionals and has won many awards in the last decade. University ServicesICMS boasts an extensive library, quiet study areas, syndicate rooms ideal for group tutorial-type activity and an academic support center. There is also a grand ballroom with a 250-person seating capacity, a formal dining room with seating for 200, a courtyard cafe and student common room.
There are fully equipped theory classrooms and computer laboratories with 24-hour email and Internet access. Students can also take advantage of a wireless network with access to the Internet and online classrooms.OrientationICMS has an extensive social, sporting and cultural activity schedule. ICMS has a dedicated Student Affairs Manager to coordinate all college activities.
Study Abroad students also have a one-week intensive orientation program when before classes begin (after the conclusion of the internship experience and the AustraLearn Program Introduction). This program includes: surf safety, team building, tours of Manly and Sydney, program briefings, welcome function, Aussie party with Australian native animals show and much more.

Entry RequirementsStudents seeking acceptance for the ICMS internship (available in the February term only) must have been accepted to study at ICMS and have previous internship or work experience in the hospitality and/or event management field.
Applicants to study abroad at ICMS must have the required GPA and have completed at least the equivalent of one year of full-time study at the university/college level.
Participants of this program should be majoring in Hospitality or Event Management.
Students with a lower GPA than the requirement may be considered on a case by case basis. Please contact our office for more information.
