The QUT Study Abroad Orientation Weekend is a highlight of your settling-in period at QUT. Don’t be surprised during this camp if you, like many other students before you, make lasting friendships with people from around the world that continue well after you return home.

The orientation weekend includes plenty of activities which may include (subject to availability of instructors) surfing, sea kayaking, a guided walk, and an Australiana trivia night. They have also arranged lots of free time on the beach for you to ‘kick back’ and get to know your fellow students!

Cruise up and down the Brisbane River and enjoy the beautiful night lights of Brisbane at our first official study abroad event for the semester. The QUT Study Abroad Brisbane River Cruise is a great way to meet and get to know fellow students and staff in the study abroad program.

Study abroad students enrolled in at least one business subject have the opportunity to be involved in our innovative Business Advantage program offered through our AACSB-accredited Faculty of Business. Business Advantage is a voluntary co-curricular, non-award program aimed at developing business graduates who can contribute effectively as citizens, as leaders in the wider community, and as competent professionals within their chosen disciplines.

QUT Science and Technology offers a preparatory research program for study abroad students who have a passion for discovery and want to have a sound understanding of research methods and writing, literature analysis and problem identification. This unique program is also a pathway to the Doctor of Philosophy program at QUT.

Study Abroad students wishing to study Education can gain real world teaching experience through field studies in a rural or remote location.

Get Involved Abroad

Extracurricular Activities

The best part about studying abroad is experiencing a different culture, so QUT offers a range of recreational services to ensure students make the most of all aspects of campus life.

Why not join one of QUT’s 70 different clubs such as abseiling, diving, bushwalking, cycling, and rollerblading, just to name a few…or get involved in a rugby league or cricket team and learn more about the local sporting culture. Take full advantage of our on-campus facilities and swim in the indoor swimming pool, or use the squash and netball courts, gymnasiums, athletic fields, or health and fitness centers.

Brisbane is the ideal city to base yourself to discover all the wonders of the east coast of Queensland. Just an hour south of Brisbane is the world famous Gold Coast with its famed beaches, theme parks, shopping and dining. Head an hour and a half north of Brisbane to the Sunshine coast for a quieter pace. QUT’s International Student Services organises short trips and weekend activities for international students. Trips include surfing at Stradbroke Island, hiking in Lamington National Park and shopping in Noosa. All trips are made for the budget conscious student with prices set to cover the cost of running the trip.

Community Involvelment

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in Brisbane or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program. The program includes one day of pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Conservation Volunteer Weekend.

Enhance Your Experience

Global Identity Course

While studying at QUT, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the Global Identity course (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.

This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. LEARN MORE>

Global Citizens Development Modules

The Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory, however we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication.

Advice From The Coordinator:
Past students have recommended the Caston Street Seafood and Wine Festival held in may as well as the River Festival (end of August/beginning of September).
A word from our alumni
"QUT offered a wide range of environmental classes with phenomenal field trips. I was able to learn about the rainforest by living there for 10 days, the Great Barrier Reef by living on a research island and the different Australian animals by studying them in their natural habitat. These classes went into further detail than I could have ever read about in a book. I can never put into words how much I learned from these classes. Plus my professors were mental guides, advisors, friends, and pretty much a cheerleading crowd for me there. They encouraged me all the way and assisted me in the transition. A great school, great people, and a wonderful education experience."
