Location

About Adelaide

UniSA is South Australia’s largest university with four campuses located in the metropolitan area of Adelaide plus the Center for Regional Engagement based in Regional South Australia.

Adelaide is the ultimate livable city and the capital of South Australia. Home to 1.3 million people Adelaide is big enough to offer all the advantages of city living – an energetic business environment, a vibrant cultural life and a world-wide reputation for its fine food and wines – yet the city is small enough so that those advantages are easily accessible. The city itself is beautiful and well-ordered, surrounded by parklands and within easy reach of long, white, sandy beaches and the lush green hills and valleys of Australia’s premier wine districts. And as calm and serene as the city is on most days, every month or so it explodes with the color, light and sound of one of its famous festivals.

South Australia offers plenty of opportunities for a unique and truly Australian experience beyond the metropolitan area. If you choose to study and live in Adelaide, you will discover that it is the perfect base for exploring Australia’s diverse attractions. Drive just one hour from the city, for example, and you’ll find world-famous wine regions, picturesque coastline, quaint villages, and the majestic Murray River.

Even further afield in the state’s north are the breathtaking Flinders Ranges and outback, covering more than 80 per ent of the state and offering spectacular ancient ranges, open desert spaces, lakes, wildflowers and wildlife, historic towns, and a fascinating Aboriginal and European history.

Around the University

UniSA has some of tertiary education’s best facilities for learning. That means new buildings, new laboratories, new learning spaces, new computers and computer programs and, in some cases, new learning spaces that are part learning, part social and set up to encourage group work.

With four campuses in the metropolitan area and one in the regional city of Whyalla, UniSA is South Australia’s largest university. All UniSA campuses are linked to a wireless computer network and offer modern computing facilities. All campuses have large libraries offering an extensive range of online and hardcopy resources. Campus cafés are great places to meet up with friends, and campus shops supply relevant texts, software and stationery.

Two of UniSA’s campuses are right in the middle of the Central Business District (CBD); the City East and the City West campuses. City East is located in the established cultural precinct of North Terrace. At the western end of North Terrace is the City West campus, set amidst edgy new art spaces, theatres and galleries. UniSA’s other two campuses Magill and Mawson Lakes are just outside the city. Magill offers students spacious parklands, contemporary architecture and amenities such as a theatre, playing fields, swimming pool and gymnasium. Mawson Lakes is home to some of the world’s most significant technological research as well as state of the art research facilities all set amongst innovative residential housing, shops and waterways.

Then walk along the trail, enjoy the scenic view and visit the Penguin Centre. Journey through some of South Australia’s regional towns and experience  brilliant South Australia.

Get Involved Abroad

Extracurricular Activities

Participating in sporting and recreational activities is a great way to meet new people, make friends, stay fit and healthy, reduce stress and generally get more out of the university experience. At UniSA, UniLife supports students by providing subsidy funding for a range of sports clubs. The choice of clubs is endless and includes tennis, surfing, rockclimbing, badminton, netball, dance, tae kwon do, frisbee and more!

The Student Exchange Society also offers a range of tours, day trips, activities and short courses throughout the year. Join surf trips or see an Aussie Rules football game. There are also various opportunities to enjoy the wonderful culture, food, and wine Adelaide has to offer at one of the Society’s many social gatherings.

Community Involvement

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in Adelaide or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on AustraLearn's Culture and Adventure Program. The program includes one day of pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for AustraLearn's Conservation Volunteer Weekend.

Enhance Your Experience

Global Identity Course

While studying at UniSA, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the Global Identity course (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.

This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad. LEARN MORE>

Global Citizens Development Modules

The new Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory, however we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication.

Programs in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji Coordinator

Name:Jan Amann
Title:Coordinator, Outreach and Student Services
Department:Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji Semester/Year Abroad Team
BIO:
Jan Amann manages study abroad admission and participant pre-trip services for students attending the University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Southern Cross University, La Trobe University, Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology and University of Melbourne.

Jan earned her B.A. in English and Philosophy from the University of Scranton in 2006. After studying abroad at the University of Otago in New Zealand, Jan was inspired to work for her school’s study abroad office and pursue an exciting career in International Education. Following graduation, Jan moved to New Zealand for one year where she had the opportunity to travel and work for the government. She has also worked with youth for many years, and led a group of students on an Experiment in International Living trip abroad in 2010. Jan completed her M.A. in International Education at New York University, where she studied abroad (again!) in Hong Kong, China, and worked with international students.

Jan’s additional travels have brought her to Australia, Italy, Canada, Belgium, France, England and the Caribbean. Jan looks forward to helping AustraLearn students plan their semesters abroad!

Advice From The Coordinator:
South Australia is the "Festival State", so be prepared for lots of fun, unique festivals to take place throughout your stay in Adelaide!
