This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying in Australia with AustraLearn. LEARN MORE>

Location

Canberra is a planned city of 324,000 people nestled in a picturesque bushland setting. The ANU campus is located on the city center’s western limit and is also bordered by the picturesque Lake Burley Griffin and the city’s focal point, Black Mountain. Canberra is also home to Australia’s Parliament and diplomatic missions from over 120 countries.

Parliament House is just one of several distinctive architectural features, which include the High Court of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, the Australian War Memorial, the Australian Institute of Sport, and the National Museum of Australia. These national institutions provide a significant cultural and political backdrop, as well as a host of resources for students.

There are frequent bus connections from the campus to the city and suburbs. Canberra is just a few hours from the ski fields of the Snowy Mountains or the beaches of the New South Wales South Coast. Sydney is a three-hour bus ride, drive, or train journey away.

Extracurricular Activities

Sporting, social, and cultural activities feature prominently in the typical university student’s lifestyle, and the ANU Students Association coordinates the social and cultural clubs and societies on campus. There is a diverse range of groups to join: from debating and public speaking societies, to sports and recreation clubs, or groups where you can meet other students from your home nation.

The ANU Sports and Recreation Association hosts specific sporting clubs such as tennis, badminton, soccer, rugby, and rowing and there are a wide range of facilities available to students including a gymnasium, aerobics classes, sporting grounds and ovals, equipment hire, and squash and tennis courts.

For outdoor lovers, Canberra has a lot to offer. Nature-based pursuits popular in the district include bushwalking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, canoeing, orienteering, triathlon, and fishing. The auditorium on the ANU campus is one of the premier venues in Canberra and regularly hosts live international and national bands. The city and nearby suburbs of Manuka and Kingston have a choice of cafes, theatres, cinemas, pubs, and nightclubs. Theatre, drama, music, and art performances are prominent both on campus and in the city.

University Services

ANU has state-of-the-art facilities including well-equipped lecture theatres and laboratories and first class computing facilities, including wireless Internet access across the campus. There are three main libraries, including a significant collection of resource material related to Asia and the Pacific region.

Non-academic support services on campus include medical, counseling, and academic skills resources. For international students, a range of specific specific services are offered by the International Office (IO), including a dedicated Study Abroad Officer.

Housing

Living in an ANU residential college allows students to meet and mix with students from Australia and from other parts of the world. ANU has a high percentage of interstate students, most of who live in a residential hall or college, which sets it apart from its Australian contemporaries. Each residential hall is a small community, where students are encouraged to participate fully in residential life. Senior tutors are on hand to assist with academic or pastoral advice, and there are active resident associations hosting social activities throughout the year.

Residential accommodation options include either fully catered (three meals a day) or self-catered (students are provided with modern, fully equipped kitchens to prepare meals). Each student has a single furnished bedroom that includes a telephone with voicemail. Residences are connected to the campus computer network providing 24-hour access to resources available on the network and beyond.

Orientation

The Student Mobility Unit provides a full range of support services including a comprehensive orientation program at the beginning of each semester and a follow-up program during each semester. Students are provided with pre-departure information and met on arrival and taken to their accommodation. The International Office provides ongoing support and assistance to international students throughout the year.

Community Involvement

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in Canberra or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on AustraLearn's Culture and Adventure Program. The program includes one day of pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for AustraLearn's Conservation Volunteer Weekend.

A word from our alumni
"I love everything about the Australian National University in Canberra. That university is more home to me now than my university is back here in the States. The entire atmosphere of the ANU is friendly, laid back and heaps of fun! There is always something going on and heaps of ways to get involved."
