University of Tasmania (Study Internship Combo) - Semester or Year Abroad

Overview

Founded in Hobart in 1890. The University of Tasmania is the fourth oldest university in Australia. If offers world leading sciences, a creative art and music environment and a wide choice of interesting subjects from fields including oceanography, environmental studies, and Antarctic studies. The University is ranked in the top 10 universities in Australia for research and boasts links with 20 specialist research institutes and research centers.

With a student population of 18,000, including approximately 2,000 international students, the University offers an encouraging and collaborative environment for a study abroad experience. Class sizes are generally small and lecturers and tutors can be consulted without difficulty. The University offers a pleasant, enjoyable natural environment for study.

The University has two campuses for Study Abroad students to choose from: Hobart and Launceston. Both campuses are set in beautiful landscaped grounds a few kilometers from the city center and most students are able to live within walking distance of their campus.

The University of Tasmania is a popular destination for students who are seeking a unique experience where the population and friendly atmosphere create an environment in which they can easily immerse themselves in the culture and make friends with the locals.

While studying at University of Tasmania, you can maximize your study abroad experience by enrolling in the new Global Identity course (EdPA 3103 Connecting Your International Experience to Your Future). The course will help you articulate the value of your experience to future employers, demonstrate your intercultural development and skills, and understand intercultural interactions.

This one-credit, online course is offered by the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities exclusively for students studying in Australia with AustraLearn. LEARN MORE>

Internship Details

The University of Tasmania offers part-time internship in the fields of Government (working in State Parliament), Journalism, and Media Studies (television, newspaper, and radio, with guaranteed publication). These placements are competitive and require an interview upon arrival.

Location

Imagine an island of majestic mountains, lush temperate rainforests, wild river rapids, rolling forested hills, and white sandy beaches. Add to that natural environment two of Australia’s oldest cities and a population of nearly 500,000, and you have Tasmania.

Hobart is the capital and largest city in Tasmania, yet it is free from overcrowding, traffic congestion, serious pollution, and major crime. Situated close to the mouth of the Derwent River and nestled in the foothills of Mount Wellington, it seems that nearly every home, office and classroom has a magnificent view.

The University's Hobart campus is set in the suburb of Sandy Bay within walking distance to the city center. Closer to the city center are the Clinical School, the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, and the prestigious School of Art. The School of Art is housed in a renovated jam factory overlooking the harbor and takes full advantage of its historic location and spectacular setting. Around 12,000 students are enrolled at the Hobart campus. The academic strengths of the Hobart campus include Antarctic Studies, Fine Arts, Geography & Environmental Studies, Law, Journalism & Media Studies and Zoology.

The Launceston campus caters for approximately 5,000 students and is set on 75 hectares, 10 minutes from the city centre and overlooking the Tamar River. Launceston city is the second largest in Tasmania and is nestled among rolling hills and vineyards at the head of the Tamar River, and offers excellent access to popular wilderness areas such as Cradle Mountain and the Narawntapu National Park (the “Serengeti” of Tasmania, renowned for its abundance of wildlife). The magnificent Cataract Gorge in central Launceston is a popular site for students to explore, with its picturesque walking trails and swimming holes.

Accessibility to the 'mainland' Although Tasmania is an island separated from the rest of Australia by Bass Strait, the 'mainland' is still very accessible and travel is affordable. Flights operate daily out of both Hobart and Launceston to Melbourne (55 minutes) and Sydney (1 1/2 hours) if you wish to get away for the weekend.

"Boomerang" passes that allow you inexpensive one-way flight coupons are available at most travel agents in the USA. These coupons allow you to city-hop across the mainland or visit Ayers Rock or the Great Barrier Reef during your break. Ferries can also take you to Melbourne from the north coast of Tasmania.

Extracurricular Activities

There is a wide variety of outdoor, sporting, and social clubs which cater to just about any interest in both Hobart and Launceston from Bushwalking and Whitewater Rafting, to Cricket and Australian Rules Football, the Gourmet Traveler's Society and the "Try Anything Once" Club. Clubs often organize activities that take place on weekends and during semester breaks. There may be a small joining fee, but other than that all you have to do is chip in for petrol (gas) and you're on your way!

Adventure clubs on campus regularly provide excursions and activities for students at a low cost, and include equipment such as surfboards, wetsuits, and scuba gear. Also, experienced providers will offer several weekend excursions during each semester, including hiking in Tasmania's National Parks and World Heritage Areas, kayaking on pristine lakes, whitewater rafting on wild rivers, and cave touring.

Academic Highlights

Particular strengths that attract Study Abroad students include:
  • Animal and Marine Sciences
  • Geography and Environmental Studies (Including Natural Environment & Wilderness Management)
  • Fine and Performing Arts
  • Indigenous Studies, Tasmania Literature
These particular areas of study take full advantage of Tasmania's National Parks and World Heritage Area by offering a variety of units which include field trips that are integral to each course and provide a real hands-on educational experience.

The University offers a wide range of other study areas including social sciences, humanities, business, law, engineering, education, architecture and science.

Special Programs/Excursions

Tasmania offers a huge range of activities for those times when you’re not studying. Examples include:
  • Viewing animals at Narawntapu National Park. See wallabies, wombats, potoroos, kangaroos and more. + Visit the Tarkine. A remarkable 350,000 hectares of wilderness, stretching from sandy beaches to rainforests.
  • Chill out at the Gorge. While only 1km from central Launceston, Cataract Gorge offers a huge range of activities including scenic walks, a chairlift, swimming holes, cafes and wildlife. For the more adventurous, it offers excellent rock climbing and white water rafting.
  • Bike the East Coast and Hike to Wineglass Bay. Cycle along almost 200km of coastal roads then hike to one of the ten best beaches in the world (as voted by US-based Outside Magazine).
  • Volunteer for Conservation work. Conservation Volunteers Australia has offices in Hobart and Launceston and invites you to explore more of Tasmania’s unique wilderness areas while participating in practical conservation work.
  • Scuba Dive off the Tasman Peninsula. Explore unique marine life as well as many shipwrecks from the convict period in the waters around the stunning Tasman Peninsula.
  • Explore Cradle Mountain and walk the Overland Track. Whether you want to hike for 2 hours or 5 days Cradle Mountain is a magical place to visit. You can enjoy an easy but enchanting walk around Dove Lake or take on the challenge of the world famous Overland Track, which starts here.
  • Surfing from Coast to Coast. Tasmania is an island so there is no lack of beaches. The East Coast is known for having some of the most consistent surf in the world and the wild West Coast is legendary for its pounding waves and long, empty beaches. Head to Marrawah for the annual Ripcurl West Coast Classic.
Many student clubs offer special tours, at excellent prices, during mid-semester breaks. However, as distances are relatively short in Tasmania, and the terrain so diverse, it’s easy to explore somewhere new every weekend.

Community Involvement

While abroad, we recommend getting involved in your local community. It's an awesome way to meet locals, experience the true Australian culture, and create long lasting memories. From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in Hobart or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on AustraLearn's Culture and Adventure Program. The program includes one day of pre-arranged volunteering with the local community. You'll interact directly with locals while giving back to and sharing your own culture with the community that first welcomes you to Australia. Plus, you can continue your volunteer efforts later in the semester by signing up for AustraLearn's Conservation Volunteer Weekend.
