Fall 2008 EuroScholars participants have just arrived in Europe

Several of the current EuroScholars participants have recently arrived at their host university in Europe and are excited to begin their semester of research. We have students attending universities in Italy, Switzerland, and The Netherlands. They are doing research in a variety of academic areas including family law, philosophy, biochemistry, and food science. Most students are currently settling into their new apartments, beginning to take language classes in the host language, and preparing to begin their involvement in their assigned research project. Stay tuned to future newsletters for more updates from current participants.

What is the role of geography in the Darfur conflict?

Sudan has been suffering from civil war and famine for decades. Surely, this tragic situation is brought about by poor politics, which have also led to increased ethnic tensions. However, fundamental geographical conditions may also play a role: most of Sudan receives little rain and the land is not very productive; yet human population has been steadily increasing. Could it be that Sudan has been approaching a situation where the land simply cannot feed the population anymore, and that the conflict in Darfur is largely driven by a fundamental fight for resources for survival?
