Highlights of the EuroScholars program
  • Semester or year abroad at one of Europe’s 12 leading research institutions
  • Participation in an established academic research project under supervision of a host university professor
  • Research opportunities available in many fields including liberal arts/humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, and engineering
  • Enrollment in a language and/or culture course of the host country (no previous language experience required - research is done in English)

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR SPRING 2009 IS OCTOBER 15th.

Unversity of Zurich

The University of Zurich (UZH) is Switzerland’s largest university, and its seven faculties encompass over 140 academic departments and institutes, offering a choice of more than 100 different degree-granting programs as well as interdisciplinary centers, laboratories and study programs whose work cuts across traditional departmental boundaries. The University is home to 24,000 students, 1,400 mid-level faculty and nearly 500 professors, almost half of whom are from other nations than Switzerland. In order to attract the best and brightest minds worldwide, the UZH strives to provide an ideal setting for research and education. As a research-based institution, the UZH provides a stimulating and inspiring environment for the advancement of innovative, high quality and teaching. It is counted among the world’s top institutions for its cutting-edge research in various global and European rankings.

Sample Research Projects at University of Zurich

1. Applied Psychology: Life Management
In this project, Prof. Dr. Michaela Esslen and her team are concerned with motivational processes related to personal goals and developmental challenges and transitions across adulthood. Two of the central areas of application are (1) how adults manage the multiple demands of work and family and (2) how young, middle-aged, and older adults develop and pursue adaptive goals in everyday life. Prof. Esslen follows a multi-method approach including self-report, behavior observation, experience sampling and diary methods, using correlational and experimental designs. LEARN MORE>

2. Chemical Hydrogen Storage
Prof. Dr. Heinz Berke and his team are doing research in the field of Organometallic Chemistry including homogeneous catalysis. Worldwide growing energy demands make it necessary to develop hydrogen storage devices for its use as a common fuel. Its reversible storage in form of chemical compounds would in particular be appropriate to circumvent the disadvantages of the direct use of hydrogen gas bearing considerable handling risks. Three detailed projects are available dealing with this matter, in which the hydrogen molecule gets catalytically activated and transferred to unsaturated amine borane type compounds or released from those. The projects consist of mainly preparative and analytical lab work, literature work and reporting. LEARN MORE>

University of Milan

Established in 1924 with four Faculties, the University of Milan has broadened its area of activity over the years to meet the needs of a rapidly developing society. As a consequence the number of Faculties has been increased to nine, including Law, Humanities, Medicine, Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Political Sciences and Exercise Sciences.
The broad range of subjects taught, which currently consists of 69 undergraduate programs, 64 master programs, 19 Graduate Schools (bunching 66 PhD courses), 13 Phd courses and several Advanced Professional Qualifications programs, attracts students from countries all over the world. The student population numbered more than 60.000 in the academic year 2007/2008.

Over the years the University of Milan has succeeded in maintaining a skilful blend of tradition and innovation, adapting to the requirements of a fast-growing society. Managing to provide both teaching and research, it is distinguished by the large variety of disciplinary fields included within its framework.

Zurich, Switzerland

The University of Zurich lies at the heart of a vibrant and multilingual city that cherishes its traditions of liberalism, pluralism, and tolerance.
The high standard of education in Switzerland has made Zurich
a business and financial center and a preferred location for both national and international headquarters.

Zurich has repeatedly been placed number one in Mercer’s worldwide quality of living survey. Its highly developed infrastructure and public transport system put all major European cities within easy reach.

Milan, Italy

The University main campus is located in the buildings of the Ospedale dei Poveri (Hospital for the Poor), known as the Cà Granda, in the heart of the city centre. Started in the XV century, the building is one of the historically and artistically most significant monumental complexes in Milan. The size reached at the end of 1990s led to the creation of two new Universities, one located in Milan itself (the University of Milan-Bicocca) and one, in cooperation with the University of Pavia, located in Como and Varese (University of Insubria). Despite these developments, the University of Milan is still one of the largest Universities in Italy in terms of teaching staff and research activities, with almost 150 units including Departments, Institutes and Research Centres.
