In the Spotlight: Heidelberg University Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, is Germany’s oldest university and has one of the strongest research profiles in all Europe. Our successes in the Excellence Initiative and in internationally recognized rankings prove that Heidelberg’s excellent reputation and leading role in the scientific community is well deserved. In terms of educating students and promoting promising early-career academics, the Ruperto Carola relies on its two strongest points: research-based teaching and superlative, well-structured training for Ph.D. candidates. Heidelberg University is a comprehensive university, offering the full spectrum of disciplines in the humanities, law and the social sciences alongside the natural and life sciences, including medicine. As a comprehensive university, Heidelberg aims to continue to strengthen the individual disciplines and to further interdisciplinary cooperation, as well as to carry research results over into society and industry. Dialogue Beyond Traditional Disciplinary Boundaries The principle of a comprehensive university is a central component of our institutional strategy, “Heidelberg: Realizing the Potential of a Comprehensive University”, with which Heidelberg University competed successfully in the Germany-wide Excellence Initiative. More Information: From our Alumni Joshua Bryan, Rutgers University, EuroScholar at Zurich University, Fall 2008 When I graduated from Rutgers, I choose to attend New Jersey Dental School. For now I have decided not to pursue research further, but I still have the option if I change my mind in the future. I know how much I learned during my time in Zurich, not only in my research project but also of the culture of Switzerland and the way research is performed abroad. It is humbling to know that while I learned a great deal through EuroScholars, I still have a lot to learn. Beginning my research really put this in perspective since the topic was new to me. > Knowing what I do now about histology and pathology, I would be better at the research I had been participating in. That may be one of the greatest strengths of participating in research. It can expose the limits of your understanding and the limits of human understanding on a topic. Then you can learn more. For now, I will pursue a career in dentistry, and I know what to expect from research if I decide to perform research again.
