Learn more about the EuroScholars Program IN THE SPOTLIGHT: UTRECHT In 2011 Utrecht University celebrates its 375th anniversary. Utrecht University is uniquely positioned both academically and geographically. The university has three campuses situated throughout the historically- and culturally-rich student city of Utrecht, quite literally the heart of the Netherlands. Utrecht University is internationally recognized for its stimulating academic environment. It demonstrates an outstanding performance in multiple international rankings. The University is highly ranked in the prestigious Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities 2010, at position 50. Utrecht University ranks 11th in Europe and has topped the list in the Netherlands for several years now. Quality in research and education The international recognition of the quality of Utrecht University reflects the distinguishing characteristics of Utrecht University. A wide range of academic fields which, coupled with a multidisciplinary approach to both research and teaching, creates a fertile environment for interdisciplinary innovation and insights in areas ranging from human rights to immunology. Each year about 500 PhD’s graduate from Utrecht University. Based on faculty priority areas, Utrecht University has selected 15 thematic clusters of research. These research focus areas consist of multidisciplinary clusters bringing together top-class research groups in each thematic field. International Students Every year, hundreds of international students with about 125 different nationalities come to Utrecht to take courses taught in English. Such courses are offered in nearly all disciplines and at all degree levels. The 7 faculties of Utrecht University offer a broad range of almost 50 undergraduate and 200 graduate programs, the latter including many English-taught programs. There are almost 30,000 students at Utrecht University. Every year, more than 2,000 international students and researchers stay in Utrecht for variable periods of time. The university offers the unique ‘Utrecht Feel At Home Service’, for international students, guaranteeing the highest level of student support services before arrival and while at Utrecht University. A spider in research webs Utrecht University has a very strong profile in Sustainability and Life Sciences. Utrecht University participates in a large number of public and public-private collaborations. Climate-KIC: Utrecht University coordinates the pan-European consortium Climate Knowledge and Innovation Community (Climate-KIC). Climate-KIC is one of the three European KIC’s of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. With Climate-KIC Utrecht is in the heart of European developments in research and education in sustainability. Climate-KIC will develop sustainable solutions that tackle climate change and at the same time create new businesses and jobs. In the international consortium, the Netherlands will play a leading role as regards water management, sustainable production regimes and climate-neutral cities. Utrecht Center for Earth and Sustainability The Utrecht Center for Earth and Sustainability is a cooperation between Utrecht University (3 faculties, Science, Geosciences, and Law, Economics & Governance and the interdisciplinary Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences), the Dutch Institute for Applied Science (TNO), the Royal Meteorological Institute, Research and Consultancy Institute Deltares and the Watercylcle Research Institute. This brings together various aspects and (inter)national expertise sustainability research. The city of Utrecht, the Netherlands Utrecht is a bustling city in the geographical centre of the Netherlands. The city boasts a rich history that goes back to Roman times. In the historic centre you will find excellent museums in a setting of picturesque courtyards, restaurants and delightful little shops. Much of the city’s mediaeval atmosphere can still be felt today in its pattern of streets and alleys. In the summer you can enjoy a drink or a meal at one of many pavement cafés along the streets and canals. Utrecht is also known for its festivals and cultural program. Cultural events and festivals are held weekly. The varied range of large and small theatres in Utrecht will surprise you. Leading theatre groups present plays, opera, dance, musicals and cabaret shows. Utrecht also has many trendy clubs where you can hear the latest hits and see the trendiest fashions. All this together with student societies for every type of student makes the city of Utrecht a very attractive place for all kinds of people, including students. With its 300,000 inhabitants, Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands and with no less than one sixth of the inhabitants being students, Utrecht is a real student city.
