Capitalize on your abroad experience during your career search

Simply listing a study abroad experience on your resume most liklety doesn't speak justice to the effect your experience had on your ability to perform well in a career. But how do you summarize your new skills and profound perspectives in a resume or job interview? Below are a few helpful tips from Jean-Marc Hachey, author of The BIG Guide to Living and Working Overseas:

1. Develop a stock of career stories to help:

  • describe a situation where you worked with other students as a team while abroad and what your role was with that team
  • describe encounters with professionals in the field
  • speak about personal encounters giving insight into local culture and business practices
  • speak about cultural similarities

2. When explaining your international experience:

  • Be professional when describing your study abroad experience (don't speak only of the fun times with friends, but remember the cultural, academic, and personal elements as well)
  • Use the language of the field/work you're interviewing for
  • Speak of successes and accomplishments
  • Avoid shocking stories (i.e., getting lost)
