Sport in Australia

The Australian culture of brotherhood and intense resilience has fueled its passion for sport. Although the typecast that ALL Aussies love sport is still only a stereotype, there is definitely a national passion for competitive play. Sport enthusiast or not, Australia offers a fun and fervor-filled experience for anyone. The roaring crowd at an Australian Rules Football (AFL) match in the fan filled stadium of the game’s birth place, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is an experience for any Australian visitor. And if the AFL is not rough enough, check out the Rugby League.

For a relaxed (and often uneventful) sport, cricket never fails to confuse and intrigue a new spectator. The Australian Open is one of tennis’ Grand Slams and electrifies Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. The Melbourne Cup brings out socialites and big hats as the entire nation stops for this public holiday and horse race.

Bells Beach Surf Classic appeals to any beach bum while the Formula One Grand Prix is all about speed. Soccer lovers should witness the Socceroos and the National Soccer League. Being a society allied to the sea, Australians' passion for swim and boating is best experienced on the many beaches and at the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, respectfully. Despite your athletic ability or enthusiasm, playing a game of netball is a must as it is Australia’s most popular participation sport.
