Additional Advice

Your coverage will begin the same day as group flight departure from the US and is valid for six months (semester abroad students) or a year (year abroad students). If you are traveling prior to the rest of the group, please purchase supplemental insurance coverage.

You will receive your insurance documents from the International Office staff during your Orientation Week upon arrival at your New Zealand University.

You are covered for a maximum of 31 days for temporary visits to Australia and the Islands of the South West Pacific and return during the Period of Insurance. If you are unsure if your travel destination is included in your coverage, please contact your insurance provider.

Please note: You should have health coverage for any time you plan to travel outside New Zealand before, during and/or after the program. YOUR OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVERAGE IS ONLY VALID FOR THE TIME YOU ARE IN NEW ZEALAND.

Pre-existing conditions: You cannot claim for any costs associated with any ailment, illness, disability or condition (or secondary condition related to this ailment, illness, disability or condition) that you suffered from at any time before you came to New Zealand. If you have a pre-existing condition, it is in your best interest to continue your U.S. insurance during your semester in New Zealand. Check with your current insurer to determine how you will be covered while abroad.

ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation)

The ACC information below was taken from their website in July 2009. Please visit the ACC website at the following address for the most current information, http://www.acc.co.nz/

We hope your visit to New Zealand will be accident-free, but if you are injured there, you may need the help of ACC.

Since you cannot sue anyone for personal injury in New Zealand, except for punitive damages, ACC provides assistance toward the costs of treatment for personal injuries, helping with your recovery and, in some cases, compensation for lost pay (if you have earned income and paid tax in New Zealand).
**Note: ACC is a compensation scheme unique to New Zealand and does not exist in the US, Canada or in Australia.

Here are some of the details of ACC coverage:

  • ACC coverage is free to you as a visitor to New Zealand. ACC covers personal injuries occurring in New Zealand, and contributes to the cost of treatment that you receive in New Zealand.
  • This accident compensation scheme generally covers you for treatment of personal injury. Personal injury is a physical injury or a mental injury, suffered due to a physical injury. Personal injury also includes mental or nervous shock after sexual assault or abuse. A personal injury may be caused by an accident at work, home or on the road, a work related gradual process disease or infection, medical misadventure or sexual assault or abuse. Physical injuries may include wounds, lacerations, sprains, strains, fractures, amputations, dislocations, work-related injuries (e.g. tendonitis), dental injuries (in some cases), or hearing loss as the result of an accident.
  • ACC does NOT cover illness, stress, hurt feelings, loss of enjoyment or other emotional issues.
  • If ACC accepts your claim, they can help pay for suitable treatment in New Zealand. Usually you must pay part of the cost of the treatment yourself. Emergency treatment at a public hospital is free for visitors, as it is for New Zealand residents.
  • ACC cannot pay for other expenses such as delayed travel or loss of income in your home country and they do not cover illness.
  • If you require continued treatment for your injury after returning to your home country, ACC typically does not cover any of these expenses. You should seek advice from your International Student Health plan (i.e. Student Safe) in this instance.

ACC does not provide coverage if:

  • You are injured when on board (or getting on or off) the boat, plane or any other craft that you use to travel to or from New Zealand.
  • You are injured while traveling around the country in the craft you arrived on, such as a yacht or cruise ship. You are not covered whenever you are on board (or on the gangway).
  • You are on an excursion during your stay that takes you 300 nautical miles or more from New Zealand.
