| Health Insurance (Overseas Student Health Coverage) - Australia’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) requires all holders of a student visa to maintain Overseas Student Health coverage (OSHC) during their stay in Australia. The cost of your OSHC coverage is included in your AustraLearn program fees.
- OSHC provides health coverage for overseas students, similar to that provided to Australians through Medicare, the major part of the national health care system in Australia.
- In addition to treatment by general practitioners and in public hospitals, OSHC also includes access to some private hospitals, emergency ambulance coverage, and prescription medicine benefits.
- The majority of students require some type of medical care while they are abroad. It is important that you familiarize yourself with the OSHC coverage details for your specific provider so that you are informed should you need to seek medical assistance.
- Each of the Australian universities uses one of following OSHC Providers: Medibank Private, OSHC Worldcare or Australian Health Management.
- At your Australian university’s orientation, you will receive the instructions and paperwork necessary to obtain your insurance card.
- If you do not receive the application or insurance card during orientation at your Australian university, you should contact the International Office. Should you require additional assistance, you can contact the health care provider office nearest your university.
- You are covered by this insurance and are entitled to free or subsidized treatment from the first day of your AustraLearn Program Introduction, even before your membership card/booklet is issued.
If you do need medical care prior to receiving your OSHC card, you will be required to pay in full at the time of service and will be reimbursed by your OSHC provider once a claim has been submitted.
